Transparent Balloon Types Explained – Bubble, Bobo, Latex, AQUA

02 aqua pic

Clear balloons are widely used in events, decorations, and gift arrangements—but not all “clear balloons” are the same.

Terms like bubble balloon, bobo balloon, and clear latex balloon are often used interchangeably. In reality, they refer to different materials with different performance, durability, and use cases. If you choose the wrong type, you may run into issues like short float time, poor clarity, or difficulty putting items inside.

This guide explains the key differences and helps you choose the right balloon for your purpose.

A clear balloon is any balloon made from transparent material instead of solid-colored latex or foil.

They are commonly used for:

  • Balloon bouquets
  • Event decorations (including LED setups)
  • Confetti or stuffed designs (flowers, small gifts)
  • Gift arrangements

While they may look similar, the material (latex vs. plastic film vs. TPU) significantly affects how they perform.

Although some transparent balloons may be made from similar film materials, their design, elasticity, and intended use can vary significantly.

For example, some balloons are suitable for LED decorations, while others are better suited for balloon-in-balloon designs or gift packaging.

Here is an explanation of 4 different types of transparent balloons: Bubble Balloon™, Bobo-style balloon, Clear latex balloon, and AQUA BALLOON™.

Bubble Balloon™

Bubble balloon

A Bubble Balloon™ is made from a special plastic film and is commonly used for indoor decoration and gifting. Originally developed by TakaraTec in Japan. While it is relatively high-priced, it offers premium quality and a polished appearance, making it ideal for special occasions. It is often used for balloon-in-balloon designs and is also popular in professional settings, such as B2B events, to create a refined impression.

Helium duration: More than a couple of weeks

Material category: Stretchable plastic film

Characteristics:

  • Extremely soft and stretchy
  • Beautiful shape; No need to stretch by hand before inflating
  • High transparency and shine

Best for:

  • Wedding decorations
  • Floral gifts with balloons
  • Balloon-in-balloon decoration
  • Artistic displays
  • Gifts for indoor environments (hospital, home, office, etc)

Bobo-style balloon

bobo balloon with LED

A Bobo-style balloon is typically used as a base for decoration rather than a decoration on its own, especially in outdoor or nighttime settings.

Originally, Bobo Balloon is a product name for TPU (polyurethane) balloons of a Chinese manufacturer, but the term is now often used generically. These balloons are thicker and more durable, making them ideal for LED installations and interactive decorations.
Stretching: Must be stretched thoroughly before inflation to ensure a round, centered shape.

Helium duration: A couple of days to weeks

Material category: Polyurethane (TPU)

Characteristics:

  • Thick and durable material
  • Easy to attach or wrap LED lights

Best for:

  • LED decorations
  • Night events

Clear latex balloon

Clear latex balloon

Clear latex balloons are the most common and widely available type. Made from natural rubber, they are affordable but have a much shorter helium lifespan. Oxidation occurs quickly, causing the surface to become cloudy within hours to a day. They are perfect for short-term events where cost efficiency is a priority.

Helium duration: About half a day

Material category: Natural rubber

Characteristics:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Soft and flexible
  • Easy to source

Best for:

  • Large-scale decorations for short-term use
  • Budget-conscious setups
  • Short-term events and parties

AQUA BALLOON™

Aqua balloon

AQUA BALLOON™ is a transparent balloon product developed by TakaraTec. Like Bobo balloons, it is made from TPU, but it is thinner and more elastic. It also offers superior transparency and a perfectly round shape. This makes it the easiest and most visually appealing option for inserting items such as flowers, gifts, confetti, or smaller balloons. It can be used on its own or as a coating layer over latex balloons to create longer-lasting decorative effects.

Helium duration: About half a day

Material category: Polyurethane-based film

Characteristics:

  • Very soft and highly stretchable for stuffing items inside
  • Crystal-clear transparency

Best for:

  • Wedding decorations
  • Flower arrangements
  • Decorations(without helium)
  • Balloon gifts (without helium)

While all four types can technically be used for confetti, LED decoration, helium, or stuffing, each has unique strengths that make it better suited for specific situations.

For LED balloons: Bobo-style are most suitable

For party, short-term decoration: Clear latex balloons are suitable

For high quality long lasting presentation and gifting: Bubble Balloon™are most suitable

For gift staffing: AQUA BALLOON™ are most suitable

People get confused with these 4 types of balloons for the following reasons.

1. “Bubble” and “Bobo” have a similar sound

“Bubble balloon” and “bobo balloon” sound alike and share a similar transparent appearance, so they are often confused with one another. At a glance, both look like clear balloons, which makes it even harder to tell them apart—especially for first-time buyers.

2. Product name and category name are mixed

“Transparent balloons” or “clear balloons” are simply descriptive category terms and do not have a single standardized or official name. Because of this, confusion often arises.

For example, “Bobo” is originally a product name for China-made polyurethane (TPU) transparent balloons, while “Bubble Balloon™” and “AQUA BALLOON™” are product names for Japan-made transparent balloons. Each of these has different materials and features, and therefore represents a different type of balloon within this category.

However, these product names—such as Bubble Balloon™ and Bobo Balloon—are often used interchangeably with category names on e-commerce sites and social media. In addition, the name “AQUA BALLOON™” is sometimes used to refer to a manufacturer or a product series.

As a result, these terms are frequently confused with other types of transparent balloons, including clear latex balloons, Bubble Balloon™, AQUA BALLOON™, and Bobo-style balloons. In some cases, all transparent balloons are simply referred to as “Aqua balloons.”

Among these four types, two are produced by TakaraTec, a Japanese balloon manufacturer known for its high-quality products. Our balloons are designed to maintain shape and clarity over time, making them ideal for both emotional gifting and professional presentation.

Here are some images to show how they look and how they are used separately.

Transparent balloons are not a single product, but a category with multiple types, each offering different strengths.

There are at least four distinct types, each with its own strengths. Factors such as helium longevity, price, material, and intended use all play an important role. Choosing the right balloon ensures you get the most value and the best results for your specific purpose.
