How Many Helium Balloons Are Needed to Lift a Person?

To calculate how many helium balloons are needed to lift 1 pound, let’s use the commonly referenced 18-inch balloon.

1 pound = 16 oz

  • Net lift of an 18-inch balloon: 1.8 oz
  • Calculation: 16 ÷ 1.8  ≈  9 balloons

Answer: Approximately 9 pieces of 18-inch balloons are needed to lift 1 pound.


*This number may increase slightly depending on the weight of the balloon, string, and any attached accessories.

With larger balloons, the number decreases. A 36-inch balloon can lift about 9.7 oz, so only about 2 balloons lift 1 pound.
This is why professionals use large balloons for lifting demonstrations.

Now, let’s estimate how many balloons are needed to lift a person. We’ll use a sample weight of 150 pounds, which is roughly the weight of an average adult. 

  • Convert to ounces: 2,400 oz
  • Lift per 18-inch balloon: about 1.8 oz
  • 2,400 oz ÷ 1.8 oz ≈ 1,334 balloons

So, lifting 150 pounds with 18-inch balloons would require about 1,334 balloons.

It will be about 649 balloons for 24-inch balloons.

  • 24-inch lift: 3.7 oz 
  • 2,400 oz ÷ 3.7 oz  About 649 balloons

Using 24-inch balloons:

Even with huge 36-inch balloons, you’d still need around 181,443 balloons.
