How to dispose of a helium tank?

Helium Balloons

A helium tank is great when you want to inflate a large number of balloons at home or for an event. The event may be fun, but afterward, you may wonder how to dispose of a helium tank properly.

In this article, you will find basic instructions on how they can be disposed of safely.

Before disposing of a helium tank, you may consider recycling it. However, it’s difficult to identify if the tank is recyclable on your own, so we recommend checking the product description or asking the vendor before purchasing.

If your helium tank is recyclable, in many cases, you may be able to return the empty tank to the store where you purchased it. Some suppliers and manufacturers provide guidance or return options for used tanks.

A helium tank can be dangerous if it’s not handled correctly. Please keep the following points in mind before disposing of it:

  • Make sure the tank is completely empty to avoid an explosion or gas leakage
  • Empty the tank in a well-ventilated area
  • Check whether the tank is reusable; if so, return it to the store or supplier
  • Prepare appropriate tools based on the type of helium tank

Disposing of a helium tank requires careful preparation and attention to safety. Even if a tank appears to be empty, a small amount of gas may remain inside. If the tank is handled or discarded incorrectly, this can pose a risk.

It is important to follow the proper procedure to ensure all remaining gas is released and the tank is safe for disposal.

What you need

Before starting, prepare the necessary tools:

  • A flat-headed screwdriver
  • A hammer

These tools are used in the final step to puncture the safety disk and clearly indicate that the tank is completely empty. Some

You may also want to prepare:

  • Protective gloves
  • Safety glasses

Metal fragments or sudden air release may occur during the process. Some products may not be recommend to treat it by yourself, so we recommend to read the instructions about the products beforehand.

1. Fully open the valve

Fully open the valve by turning the valve counterclockwise and releasing any remaining gas inside the tank. Always do this in a well-ventilated place.

Even if you believe the tank is already empty, it’s strongly recommended to s take some time to wait. Small amounts of helium can remain trapped inside.

Listen carefully for any hissing sound, which indicates gas is being released. Leave the valve open until no sound can be heard. This may take several minutes, depending on the tank size.

Afterward, leave the valve open for a short time to ensure full depressurisation.

2. Remove the tilt-nozzle

Remove the tilt-nozzle by turning it or using a tool if necessary. If you hear a hissing sound during the removal, stop and wait until the sound completely stops. This indicates that helium is still inside and is being released.

Once the nozzle has been removed, briefly check the opening to confirm there is no remaining pressure.

3. Use a screwdriver to rupture the disk

The final step is to rupture the safety disk on the tank. This area is designed for puncturing and is typically thinner than the surrounding metal.

Place the tip of a flat-headed screwdriver firmly against the dent. Hold the screwdriver steady, and gently tap it with a hammer.

As the disk breaks, the lid or the seal will loosen and eventually come off.

Based on multiple description in different countries, a helium tank is often considered a hazardous item and should not be thrown away with regular household trash unless local regulations allow it.

United States

Disposal rules vary by state and city. Check with your local authority for details.

For example, if you’re living in Los Angeles, you may follow the following based on the County of Los Angeles:

  1. Contact the store where you purchased the tank to ask about returns
  2. Take the tank to a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection round-up event or permanent center
  3. Check recycling locations listed on the SmartBusiness website

United Kingdom

Contact your closest council to confirm disposal options. Some councils, such as Worcestershire County Council, instruct residents to bring helium tanks to a Household Recycling Centre.

Australia

Disposal rules differ by state. In New South Wales (NSW), helium tanks can be dropped off at Community Recycling Centres (CRC) or Household Chemical CleanOut events.

Other Countries

Regulations vary by country and municipality. Always check with the local council and/or the waste authority:

Switzerland
Ireland
Japan
Singapore
